Ranshou Fujima | 藤間蘭翔
Ranshou Fujima is a dancer specializing in kabuki-buyō (歌舞伎舞踊), particularly the art of onnagata (female forms)―including those originated by 18th-century grandmasters like Segawa Kikunojō and Nakamura Tomijūrō. Her multidisciplinary practice spans performance, choreography, directing, stage production, film, archival practice, and historical research.
She expertly draws on classical techniques and styles of onnagata while simultaneously imbuing her performances of classical female characters with contemporary themes. Ranshou’s work represents a convergence of her own memories, emotions, places, and sense of identity. By delving into both historical and contemporary references, Ranshou renders her own feminine beauty.
